Cusco Tours – Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a permit for the Inca Trail?

Yes—Inca Trail permits are required by the Peruvian government. These permits are strictly limited to 500 per day, including travelers, guides, and porters. Because of this cap, they can sell out up to 6–8 months in advance during high season.

Booking early guarantees your spot. If permits are sold out, we can offer excellent alternative treks to Machu Picchu such as the Lares, Salkantay, or Inca Jungle trails.

Our Inca Trail tours are designed to be all-inclusive, covering permits, certified guides, porters, camping equipment, daily meals, and the Machu Picchu entrance ticket. This allows you to focus on the experience rather than logistics.

We also provide pre-departure briefings and detailed packing lists. Optional gear such as sleeping bags and trekking poles can be rented in Cusco to lighten your travel load.

The Inca Trail is considered moderately challenging, with sections of steep stone steps and passes above 4,200 m / 13,800 ft. The most demanding part is «Dead Woman’s Pass,» but our pacing and support help most hikers succeed.

With proper acclimatization in Cusco, steady pacing, and good preparation, travelers of average fitness levels can complete the trek successfully and enjoy the rewarding views.

The best season for Inca Trail trekking is from May to September, during Peru’s dry season. These months offer clearer skies, stunning mountain views, and more reliable trail conditions.

The trail is closed every February for maintenance. Shoulder months like April, October, and November can provide fewer crowds and lush scenery, though with a higher chance of rain.

We recommend layered clothing for variable mountain weather, a waterproof jacket, sturdy broken-in hiking boots, a warm hat, sunscreen, and a refillable water bottle. Nights can get very cold, especially at high camps.

Our team provides a comprehensive Inca Trail packing list after booking, so you’ll know exactly what to bring. Remember that weight allowances apply for porters, so efficient packing is important.

We keep our Inca Trail groups small to ensure safety, quality guiding, and a more personal experience. This allows our guides to adapt the pace and give attention to each traveler.

Private treks are also available upon request, ideal for families, couples, or groups of friends who want more flexibility during the journey.

Porters carry camping equipment, food, and a limited amount of personal belongings per traveler. Each participant is allowed a weight allotment (usually around 6–7 kg) for clothes and sleeping gear.

You will carry your daypack with essentials such as water, layers, camera, and snacks. If you want extra support, we can arrange additional porter services.

Yes—our cooks are experienced in preparing meals for travelers with dietary restrictions such as vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free. Please let us know your needs in advance so we can adapt menus.

We also take medical conditions seriously. Our guides are trained in first aid and carry oxygen, ensuring your trek is safe and enjoyable.
